I, too, have an opinion

My name is Elizabeth and I'm probably at the movies right this very minute.

Tropic Thunder

Funnier than I thought it would be, not as funny as I was told it would be.

IMDB Plot Synopsis: Through a series of freak occurrences, a group of actors shooting a big-budget war movie are forced to become the soldiers they are portraying.
  1. I want to come clean and admit that I have a weird crush on Jay Baruchel.
  2. The trailers at the start of the film were pretty funny, especially the one about the gay monks.
  3. I’ve been hearing that a lot of groups are taking offence at the portrayal of “Simple Jack” and the liberal use of the word “retard” — I’d like to take offence because it was just plain not funny and they kept using it over and over and over. The joke fell flat and the spoof aspect of it was not terribly well executed.
  4. The soundtrack for the first half was pretty good but then they kind of lost their way in the second half, which I don’t get because it is so easy to create a soundtrack for a Vietnam movie. Do you have Motown? Check — The Temptations, “Ball of Confusion”. Do you have Creedence Clearwater Revival? Check — “Run Through The Jungle”. Do you have either “For What It’s Worth” or “All Along The Watchtower”? Check. But then they randomly included “Sympathy for the Devil” which is so not a Vietnam movie song. “For What It’s Worth” was also used in a weird context; it was much more effective in the trailer in terms of underscoring the various Vietnam tropes used time and time again.
  5. Alpa Chino is a great rap name.
  6. Tom Cruise was so disgusting and awful in this, it was great. The extended dance sequence during the credits was a little unnecessary.
  7. I get bored when actors say they haven’t based their characters on other actors. Robert Downey Jr. in this is clearly Russell Crowe, I don’t care what he says.
  8. I think since his mugshot was taken, Nick Nolte is doomed to play characters like this for the rest of his life. It’s kind of a shame, I sort of liked him in Cape Fear.
  9. Matthew McConaughey was amusing but had too much screen time for what his character was. I did like that he was playing Wii tennis, though.
  10. I figure they make so many Vietnam movies because it’s a war that looks good. I defy you to find someone who doesn’t think those choppers look fucking awesome flying over the jungle. I suppose this is ironic considering the fact that Vietnam as the first televised war was a major turning point in public opinion becuase in real life it didn’t look fucking awesome. Hooray for the silver screen?
