I, too, have an opinion

My name is Elizabeth and I'm probably at the movies right this very minute.

High School Musical 3

I am as surprised as you are that I enjoyed this.

IMDB Plot Synopsis: As seniors in high school ,Troy and Gabriella struggle with the idea of being separated from one another as college approaches. Along with the rest of the Wildcats, they stage a spring musical to address their experiences, hopes and fears about their future.
  1. I’m sorry, I still love Zac Efron. I don’t care who knows it. I like him the same way I like Justin Timberlake, which is to say I like him in spite of himself (or perhaps in spite of myself). Something I think is a bit of ongoing hilariousness that may or may not be entirely purposeful is how he’ll be walking but his movements make it look like he’s dance-walking, even though there is no reason for him to be doing it in the scene. And his gratuitous fist pumping motions are always great.
  2. Gabriella fails. FAILS. Completely fails. I dislike Vanessa Hudgeons and Gabriella is possibly the most vapid character in the series. (And I feel like that says a lot given that this is High School Musical.) I am given no reason to believe that this girl would ever stand any chance at being pre-medlaw at Stanford, I’m really not.
  3. I especially hated when Gabriella got into the possibly made-up honours program at Stanford for exceptional high school students that made her leave town for a couple of weeks. I was happy she was gone but when she was all “I CAN’T COME BACK FOR PROM OR GRAD BECAUSE IT WILL BREAK MY HEART TO SAY GOODBYE SO MANY TIMES” I really feel Troy should have said “You’re being a total flake, bitch, I’ve had it up to here with you.” She fails. He also fails for driving ten million miles to go see her because she’s too much of a petulant child to suck it up and come home.
  4. In summary: Troy and Gabriella together make me want to vomit. They’re cloying and awful when they’re on screen being all lovey-dovey. Also, I find her footwear both impractical and out of character. Who dresses like that to go to school, other than Sharpay (who clearly doesn’t count)?
  5. There was too much faux!Troy. That guy was funny for five minutes but after that not so much.
  6. Sharpay’s and Ryan’s dream sequence about wanting fame and fortune was hysterical, especially when Troy showed up as Sharpay’s fangirl. OMG. Loved the chorus line, as well.
  7. Sharpay’s double locker in pink was absolutely fabulous. Her stupid and unnecessarily British personal assistant was not.
  8. A little bit of me kind of wanted Troy to get into Julliard. I admit it. I was psyched.
  9. If I found out my high school was putting on a spring musical about the senior year of the Seniors, I would boycott. I know this is a narcissistic Disney juggernaut, but how self-involved can you get?
  10. I also feel like the audience was getting a little too into the performance in the scenes involving the bastketball team. Um, they won State at the start of the movie… this is just a dramatization of that, no need to get so excited. They also got inappropriately excited when Troy and Gabriella finally returned for the second act and you have to wonder why the entire town cares about their relationship. It’s kind of creepy.
  11. I thought the portions of the story done in the standard stage musical prop style were really excellent.
  12. My favourite part was when Troy and Chad had their big dance sequence in the junk yard. 1) Junk yard. 2) Troy Bolton with an unnecessary bandanna tied around his head. 3) Did Troy have that truck in the previous two movies or did they include it in this one solely so that it could be falling apart and they could create some junkyard choreography? I kind of dug this scene.
  13. This movie was unnecessarily long, though, or at least it felt that way.
  14. This one is better than the second one but perhaps not as good as the first. “Good” is a relative term here, of course. I’m not sold on the idea that these are quality films but they do deliver a lot of enjoyment for what you pay, so I don’t feel like they’re a total waste of money.
